About Salem Ohio
The city of Salem is located in the northern part of Columbiana County and the southern part of Mahoning County, Ohio. The city was originally founded in 1806 by John Straughan, a potter from Pennsylvania, and Zadox Street, a clockmaster from Jersey. The name Salem comes from the name Jerusalem meaning the "city of peace." Early settlers of Salem were Quakers and it was incorporated in 1830. During the 19th-century abolitionist movement, Salem acted as a major hub for the American Underground Railroad and several homes in the city acted as "stations." Salem was also the home to Ohio's first Women's Rights Convention in April of 1850!
